The following article on “Age of Brahma & The age of the Universe” is a continuation from the previous article: “Age of Brahma & The age of the Universe – 101“. Prioritize reading the previous article before proceeding to this one. Let’s try to separate the contents presented in a table from the previous article into individual parts.

Lifespan

The lifespan of our universe is 311.040 trillion years. The lifespan of the universe is directly related to the lifespan of Brahma.

Divya-yuga/Chaturyuga

Four yugas together is called a Divya-yuga, which is also called a Chaturyuga, chatur means four. “We know that there are four ages [yugas], namely Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali. These four together constitute one Divya-yuga.” (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Adi-Lia 3.7) The four yugas or ages are as follows:

  • Satya yuga 1,728,000 years
  • Tetra yuga 1,296,000 years
  • Dvapara yuga 864,000 years
  • Kali yuga 432,000 years

Total of 4 yugas = 4,320,000 years (4.32 million)

Day of Brahma (Kalpa)

According to human calculations, Brahma’s day is equivalent to a thousand ages added together. And his night lasted that long as well. (Bhagavad-Gita 8.17) Lord Krishna
4.32 x 1000 = 4.32 billion years is the value of a thousand of four yugas.

Therefore, one Brahma day (12 hours) is equivalent to 4.32 billion years. (Source: Bhagavad Purport, Gita 8.17).

“O son of Kunti, all material manifestations enter My nature at the end of the millennium, and I create them again at the beginning of another millennium by My power.” The Bhagavad-Gita 9.7, Lord Krishna

In the purport of Bhagavad-Gita 9.7, it defines “At the end of the millennium”, as meaning the end of Brahma’s life. Brahma lives for 100 of his years which is calculated as follows:
4.32 (12 hours) x 2 (24 hours) x 30 (days in month) x 12 (months in year) x 100 (100 years) =311.040 trillion (311 trillion, 40 billion years)

For Maha-Vishnu, the entire life of Brahma and the universe, which spans 311.040 trillion years, is less than a second. During this period, Maha-Vishnu only takes one breath or exhales. Lord Krishna is simply expanded upon by Maha-Vishnu. “For the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is unchanging and limitless and the cause of all causes of the universe, the duration of the two parts of Brahma’s life, as mentioned above, is calculated to be one nimesa [less than a second].” (Bhagavatam 3.11.38) Shrimad

Current Age of Universe & End Of Universe

The current age of the universe is 155.52197 trillion years.

Brahma’s days are broken up into fourteen sections known as manvantaras. The seventh Manu, Vaivasvata [the son of Vivasvan], is the current Manu. Each Manvantara has its own Manu. There are 71 divya-yugas (also called chaturyugas) that make up each manvantara. For the current Manu, Vaivasvata, his age has now spanned 27 Divya-yugas [27 x 4,320,000 solar years]. (Adi-Lila 3.8–9) Sri Caitanya-caritamrta. Every manvantara comes before and after a 1,728,000-year juncture (sandhya) period.

Age-of-Brahma-VitandaVaada
Age of Brahma

The 100 years of Brahma’s life are divided into the first and second halves. While the first half of Brahma’s life is already over, the second half is just getting started. (Shrimad-Bhagavatam 3.11.34). Brahma is in his 1st day of his 51st year. He has now lived for 1972.949 million Earth years, or 5 hours, 28 minutes, and 49 seconds in Brahma’s time. Just one second elapses for Brahma for every 100,000 years on Earth.

Calculation of time passed in the current day of Brahma

  • Time passed in current day 1972.949 million years (=1.973 billion – based on our clock)
  • 1 day for Brahma = 4.32 billion = 4320 million
  • 1 hour for Brahma = 4320/12 = 360 million
  • 1 minute for Brahma = 360/60 = 6 million
  • 1 second for Brahma = 6/60 = 0.1 million = 100,000 years
  • In Hours = 1972.949/360 = 5.4804138 hours = 5 hours
    • 0.4804138 hours = 0.4804138 x 60 minutes = 28.824828 minutes = 28 minutes
    • 0.824828 minutes = 0.824828 x 60 seconds = 49.489 seconds

Time passed in current day of Brahma is 5 hours, 28 minutes, and 49 seconds (based on Brahma’s clock)

The total age of the Universe so far is: 50 years of Brahma [4.32 x 2 x 30 x 12 x 50 = 155520 billion] + Time passed in current day of Brahma [1.972949 billion] = 155.52197 trillion years and the Time to End of Universe = 311.040 (lifespan of universe) – 155.52197 (current age of universe) =155.51803 trillion years. Please be aware that this is not the first time that a creation has been executed.

Whole universes go through cycles of creation and annihilation that last 311.040 trillion years. There are 4.32 billion-year cycles of creation and annihilation within every universe. This multitude of living beings is created when Brahma’s day is manifest, and they are all destroyed when Brahma’s night arrives.

Time and time again, this group of creatures is active when the day arrives, and they are helplessly dissolved when the night falls, O Partha. (Bhagavad-Gita 8.18-19, Lord Krishna) Only during Brahma’s day does life appear in this universe. All living things are destroyed when Brahma’s night begins, and the cosmos as a whole descends into darkness. Life manifests once more when a new day of Brahma begins.

The creation is expanding

When Lord Krishna in His form as Maha-Vishnu exhales, new universes comes out from the pores on His body. All of the universes (empty shells) return to Maha-Vishnu’s body when the lord breathes in. One inhalation or exhalation lasts for 311.040 trillion years. This is how long our universe will last.

“These universes are understood to be floating in the air that Maha Vishnu exhales. They are like atomic particles that float in sunshine and pass through the holes of a screen. All these universes are thus created by the exhalation of Maha Vishnu, and when Maha Vishnu inhales, they re-enter his body. The unlimited opulence’s of Mahā-Viṣhṇu are completely beyond material conception.” (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-Lila 20.279-280)

Are there other universes?

The material creation contains bubbles of universes. Scientists now support this theory, which is called the Multiverse. “The Supreme Lord created all the universes by combining all the various elements. There is no way to count the number of those universes because they are infinite. (Caritamrta Madhya-Lila 20.277).

“After creating the total number of universes, which are unlimited, Maha-Vishnu expanded Himself into unlimited forms and entered into each of them.” (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-Lila 20.284)

Size of our universe compared with others

“Lord Krishna said, ‘Your particular universe has a diameter of four billion miles; therefore it is the smallest of all the universes. Consequently you have only four heads.’ “ (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-Lila 21.84). The above given diameter is the inner core size and does not include the outer layers of the universe. The full diameter of the universe including the outer layers is 15,127.38 light years.

“Sukadeva Goswame said: My dear King, I have thus far described the diameter of the universe [fifty crores of yojanas, or four billion miles] and its general characteristics, according to the estimations of learned scholars.” (Shrimad-Bhagavatam 5.21.1)

“The layers or elements covering the universes are each ten times thicker than the one before, and all the universes clustered together appear like atoms in a huge combination.” (Shrimad-Bhagavatam 3.11.41)

“Every universe is covered by seven layersearth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false egoeach ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore, You are called unlimited [ananta].” (Shrimad-Bhagavatam 6.16.37)

Universe Size Calculation

  • The inner core of the universe is called the Bhu-Mandala. This is 2 billion miles in radius.
  • The Bhu-Mandala is covered with 7 layers. The first layer is particles of earth. This is 40 billion miles from the end of the core to the next layer.
  • The second layer is water particles or water vapors. This is 400 billion miles from the end of the first layer to the end of the second layer.
  • The third layer is heat or fire and this is 4000 billion miles from the end of the second layer to the end of the third layer.
  • The fourth layer is air, and this is 40,000 billion miles.
  • The fifth layer is ether or sky, and this is 400,000 billion miles.
  • The sixth layer is total energy, and this is 4000,000 billion miles.
  • The seventh layer is false ego, and this is 40,000,000 billion miles.

Total distance from the center of the universe to the end of the universe = 2 billion + 40 billion + 400 billion + 4000 billion + 40,000 billion + 400,000 billion + 4000,000 billion + 40,000,000 billion = 44444442 x 10^9 miles

  • As we know that, Speed of light =186,282 miles per second
  • 1 light year= 5.88 trillion miles (5.88 x 10^12)

The time it would take light to travel from the center of the universe to the end of the universe: = 44444442X10^9/5876025120000 = 7563.69 light years

  • The diameter of the universe is 7563.69 x 2= 15,127.38 light years (=88,949 trillion miles)
  • The time it would take light to travel from one end of the universe to the other is 15,127.38 light years

Lifespan of sun and earth

The lifespan of the sun and the earth is the duration of 12 hours (1 daytime) of Brahma, 4.32 billion years.

Age of current earth and sun

Every day of Brahma’s life begins with the creation of the sun, followed by the earth and other planets. The sun, earth, and other planets are destroyed at the conclusion of each Brahma day. However, he creates the following day, and so forth. The sun, earth, and other planets have been created, destroyed, and re-created over 18,000 times in the current universe. This creation is not the first. The age of the sun today is 1.973 billion years, which is the age of Brahma in his own time.

Since the sun and other planets like Earth were not created at the same time, the current age of 1.973 billion years is only an estimate; the true age will be lower. The Vedic texts did not provide the author with precise dates for the formation of Earth and other planets. Since life on planets like Earth cannot exist without the sun, it is undeniable that the sun was created first in the universe, followed by the earth and other planets.

Shape of planets and universes

  • ‘anda-kosah – egg shaped’ (Srimad Bhagavatam 6.16.37) – “This universal egg, or the universe in the shape of an egg, is called the manifestation of material energy.” (Shrimad-Bhagavatam 3.26.52)
  • ‘jagat-anada’ (Brahma-Samhita 5.35) – This refers to the egg-shaped planets or universes.
  • ‘brahma-anada’ (Caitanya-caritamrta 2.43) – This refers to the egg-shaped universe of a Brahma. Each universe is administered by a different Brahma. There are brahmandas, which means there are many universes.

 Abrahamic Religions Teachings

Based on the Holy Bible scriptures:

  • On day 1 God created light (Genesis 1:3-5).
  • On day 2 God created the sky (Genesis 1:6-8).
  • On day 3 God created the earth, sea, and vegetation (Genesis 1:9-13).
  • On day 4 God created the sun, moon, and stars (Genesis 1:14-19).
  • On day 5 God created birds and sea creatures (Genesis 1:20-23).
  • On day 6 God created animals and humans (Genesis 1:24-31)
  • Adam and Eve, the first humans, were created about 6,000 years ago (By adding the ages provided in Genesis 5 and 11).
  • All humans originate from Adam and Eve.
  • Based on all the above, the universe and earth are about 6,000 years old.
  • The earth is flat.

According to the Bible, after creating the earth and universe in six days, God took a break. Neither repeated creation, ongoing creation, or multiple universes are mentioned. As a result, this is the first and only creation, and it is not growing.

According to the Quran and Hadith, Adam and Eve are the ancestors of all people, and as a result, the earth, the universe, and them were created some 6,000 years ago. At least three verses (7.54, 10.3, 11.7) in the Quran make it abundantly evident that the earth and universe were created in six days. Neither repeated creation, ongoing creation, or multiple universes are mentioned. As a result, this is the first and only creation, and it is not growing.

Scriptural References

Based on the Bible, the earth is flat.

  • “I saw a very tall tree out in a field, growing higher and higher into the sky until it could be seen by everyone in all the world.” (Daniel 4:10-11) – The above states that the Earth has an ‘end’ which means the Earth is flat. It is not possible to see the end of the Earth from one point unless it is flat.
  • “I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth” (Revelation 7:1) – The above verse very clearly confirms that based on the Bible; the world is flat.

Based on the Holy Quran, the earth is flat.

  • “Who has made earth for you like a bed (spread out).” (Quran 20:53)
  • “Have We not made the earth as a bed.” (Quran 78:6)

Quran References

There are many other Quranic verses which very clearly state that the earth is flat. The Arabic word used in the Quran to describe the earth shape is ‘Mehad’, which means bed.
Based on the Quran, Adam and Eve were the first humans created by Allah, and we all originate from them.

“Go to Adam. So they will go to Adam and say to him ’You are the father of man-kind …” (Sahih Bukhari 6.60.236)

“And We said, ‘O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.’ ” (Quran 2.35)

Based on the Quran, the universe and earth were created in 6 days, about 6,000 years ago.

“Your Guardian-Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days…” (Quran 7.54)

“Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days…” (Quran 10.3)

“He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days…” (Quran 11.7)

Based on the Quran, the universe and earth were joined together and then split at creation.

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?” (Holy Quran 21.30)
