The following article will focus on a few key terms related to the Age of Brahma (the creator, according to Sanatana Dharma) and the age of the Universe, using Lord Brahma as the basis for calculation. This article contains information from various sources worldwide, with references to the data provided at the end of the section.
Yugas
[1] According to the philosophy of Sanatana Dharma, the world is comprised of four major “Yugas” (ages), epochs, or time cycles, each spanning tens of thousands of human years. The four time periods are known as Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. Vedic cosmology asserts that the universe is formed once every 4.1 to 8.2 billion years and is subsequently annihilated. This length of time is perceived as equivalent to one complete day and night for Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. Brahma’s estimated lifespan ranges from 311 trillion to 40 billion years (Calculated based on Human Timelines, from Planet earth). Much like the moon’s phases, the changing seasons, and the ebb and flow of tides, these Yugas are believed to follow cyclical patterns.
Each of the four Yugas signifies stages of change and development, wherein both the physical universe and human awareness experience considerable shifts, either beneficially or adversely, based on the specific Yuga. The complete cycle of a Yuga begins at its peak, the Golden Age of awareness. It then gradually moves through different stages until it arrives at a Dark Age marked by malice and ignorance, subsequently progressing toward positivity, ultimately returning to the Golden Age to fulfill the cycle. As per Hindu belief, a full cycle of the Yuga matches the duration needed for the solar system to revolve around a different star.
Duration
Each yuga (Length of each Yuga) has a duration of 4800 years (Satya) + 3600 years (Treta) + 2400 years (Dwapara) + 1200 years (Kali) = 12,000 years, according to the Laws of Manu, the oldest known scripture that detailed the four yugas in full. The full cycle takes 24,000 years to complete, as this figure just represents half of it. This is another equinox precession.
There is no specific indication here of the precise duration of a year of life for demigods. Nevertheless, the latest understanding of the Srimad Bhagavatam appears to suggest that the length of the Yugas seen in terms of the Demigods
- Satya Yuga is approximately 4,800
- Treta Yuga is approximately 3600 years
- Dwapara Yuga is approximately 2,400 years;
- Kali Yuga lasts about 1,200 years of the half-gods. Therefore, it could likely be deduced from these figures that One year for a demigod would equal approximately 360 years for humans.
Furthermore, this implies that the Satya Yuga spanned 4,800×360 years, which is approximately 1,728,000 years. In comparison, the Treta Yuga spanned 3,600×360 years, totaling 1,296,000 years. Likewise, the Dvapara Yuga endured for 2,400 multiplied by 360 years, totaling 864,000 years. Believed to be the shortest of all, the Kali Yuga lasts for only 1,200×360 years, equating to 432,000 years. The earlier reported data clearly indicates that the four Yugas have a timeline ratio of 4:3:2:1.
As noted earlier, humankind as a whole gradually loses wisdom, knowledge, intellect, life expectancy, and physical and spiritual vigor with each passing generation. This inherently suggests that dharma, or righteousness, is deteriorating and being destroyed.
- Satya Yuga: During this period, when human size was supposed to be 21 cubits, Dharma was dominant. At this time, the typical human lifespan was One hundred thousand years.
- Treta Yuga: During this yuga, virtue decreased to a fourth of what it had been during the preceding one. The typical human lifespan was 10,000 years, and human size was measured at 14 cubits.
- During the Dwapara Yuga, sin and virtue were split equally. Humans had a lifespan of up to 1000 years and a normal size of seven cubits.
- Kali Yuga: In this yuga, sin dominates and there is only one quarter of virtue. The typical human lifespan is approximately one hundered years, and human stature is decreased to 3.5 cubits. The average human lifetime is predicted to drop to 20 years by the conclusion of this dreadful Dark Age.
